Functional Architecture Made Simple with ISE&PPOOA MBSE Methodology

This GfSE webinar presents an integrated systems and software engineering methodology named ISE&PPOOA (Integrated Systems Engineering and Pipelines of Processes in Object Oriented Architectures) where traditional functional based systems engineering is combined with MBSE using the functional paradigm to represent behavior.

The functional architecture represents the decomposition of the system functions and the interactions between these functions representing flows of behavior. It is the result of the functional analysis and it is at the core of the system architecture modeling, as the functional architecture represents the main definition of what the system does to deliver value.

The functional architecture is modeled by diverse diagrams supporting the different views applied to the model. The main views of the functional architecture are those describing the functional hierarchy, the functional structure & interfaces, and the functional flows. These views are not easily obtained if their development is not supported by a consistent methodological process supported by a MBSE tool.

The main benefit of the presented methodology + tool approach is that the main functional flows representing behavior are seamlessly obtained from the functional interfaces represented schematically by N² charts, which are built using the functions identified and represented by SysML BDD hierarchies.

In this webinar Jose L. Fernandez and Alfonso Garcia are going to demonstrate to systems engineers how to apply the ISE&PPOOA MBSE methodology to define the functional architecture of an Electric Parking Brake System (EPBS) using the Cameo Systems Modeler ™ tool out of the box, without adding any other profile but the standard SysML, using dependency matrices to build N² charts.

José L. Fernández has a PhD in Computer Science, and an Engineering Degree in Aeronautical Engineering, both from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). He has over 30 years of experience in industry as system engineer, project leader, researcher, department manager and consultant. He was involved in projects dealing with software development and maintenance of large systems, specifically real-time systems for air traffic control, power plants Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), avionics, cellular phone applications and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. He was associate professor at the E.T.S. Ingenieros Industriales, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). He is the methodologist of the PPOOA architectural framework for real-time systems and ISE&PPOOA, an integrated systems and software MBSE methodology for complex systems.

Alfonso García is an independent Systems Engineering consultant. He has a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering (Automation and Electronics) from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and he is an INCOSE Certified Systems Engineer Professional (CSEP) since 2014. He has more than 13 years of professional experience as systems engineer, architect and consultant, and he was involved in different engineering projects, including air traffic management, avionics, automotive, and elevation systems, using both classic Systems Engineering and MBSE.
